Truman Center for National Policy & Truman National Security Project Announce New Gender Champion
On Monday, July 8th 2024, the Truman Center for National Policy and Truman National Security Project announced a new Gender Champion. Truman’s Vice President for Impact and Community, Angelic Young, joined the ranks of leaders who have committed to making gender equity a working reality through Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy. Young takes over from outgoing Truman President & CEO, Jenna Ben-Yehuda, who departed the organization to join the Atlantic Council.
“Truman is proud to continue its commitment to Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy. The importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging to national security cannot be overstated. When our institutions don’t reflect America’s diversity or fail to employ best practices that foster belonging and inclusion, it strikes at the heart of our nation’s most valuable strength and what keeps us safe.” said Ms. Young.
As a Gender Champion, Ms. Young will uphold the Panel Parity Pledge and implement three SMARTIE commitments:
- Achieve an average of 50% womxn’s participation across Truman events, including TruCon, Truman’s annual national security conference, roundtable discussions, and virtual panels.
- All participants in recruitment and selection of new Truman National Security Project members are trained on implicit bias and follow the recruitment handbook guidance, which includes specific questions and candidate scorecards developed by Truman to reduce the influence of bias.
- Implement staff training programs on gender and racial equity to raise awareness about unconscious bias, diversity, and inclusion, including accomplice and anti-harassment training.
Truman defines national security broadly and believes that issues ranging from climate change to immigration to democratic resilience and more all impact America’s national security. Because broader inputs into policymaking lead to better policy outcomes, Truman leverages its national network, unwavering commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging, and a growing body of work that extends throughout America to reshape the national security discourse.
